Pope at Epiphany Mass – Let us ask ourselves: is there life in our Church, space for something new to be born?

Papal Mass, Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, closing of the Holy Door

Homily of Pope Leo XIV

Dear brothers and sisters,

The Gospel (cf. Mt 2:1-12) described for us the great joy the Magi experienced when they saw the star once again (cf. v. 10), and at the same time how Herod and all in Jerusalem were troubled by their searching (cf. v. 3). Indeed, every time Sacred Scripture speaks of God manifesting himself, it does not hide the contrasting reactions, such as joy and agitation, resistance and obedience, fear and longing… Read more »

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 John 4:7-10
Psalm: 71 (72):2,3-4ab,7-8

Gospel: Mark 6:34-44

In those days, as Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? … Read more »

So that our heart may rest in you – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

Mass on the Solemnity of the Epiphany

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Church, Fgura

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Rajna l-kewkba tiegħu tielgħa, u ġejna nqimuh” (Mt 2:2). Dan huwa l-kliem tal-maġi meta bdew jistaqsu fejn hu dak li twieled, is-sultan tal-Lhud. Illum qed nagħmlu din iċ-ċelebrazzjoni, din is-solennità tal-Epifanija, li tfakkarna proprju f’din il-ġrajja: meta l-maġi ġew mill-bogħod biex ifittxu u jsibu lil Ġesù, u jistgħu jqimuh.   Imbagħad, kif nafu, offrewlu r-rigali tagħhom u wara, telqu minn triq oħra… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 5th January

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 John 3:22 – 4:6
Psalm: 2:7-8,10-11

Gospel: Mt 4:12-17,23-25

In those days, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan… Read more »
