The Pontifical Mission Societies have the common aim of assisting the Holy Father, in spreading missionary awareness among priests, religious, adults and children; encouraging aid to the poor, and gathering financial support for different projects in third world countries. The funds collected in Malta and Gozo by the Pontifical Mission Societies are sent directly to mission dioceses in need, as instructed by our head office in Rome.
The Pontifical Mission Societies have played an important role in spreading God’s word throughout the world especially in countries in which the Catholic Church is engaged in reaching people who have never been evangelized. The Societies aim was and still is to bring Christ to all Nations.

  • The Societies are four:

    • The Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which was founded in France by Pauline Jaricot in 1822, with the aim of helping the missions.
    • The Pontifical Society of the Holy Childhood, which was founded in France in 1842 by Bishop Charles Forbin Janson to help children in mission lands, especially those in schools and orphanages.
    • The Pontifical Society of St. Peter Apostle for the Local Clergy, which was founded by two women, Jeanne and Stephanie Bigard, in 1889 in France, with the aim of providing funds for Seminaries in mission lands.
    • The Pontifical Missionary Union for the Clergy, which has all priests and religious as its members; they are expected to encourage love for the missions among Christian people.

The Mission Office publishes a monthly magazine “Malta Missjunarja”, which has a missionary slant and reaches many families, students and Maltese missionaries abroad.
The office also incorporates a religious gift shop – Cordina’s Emporium, and a Bazaar – which are well known by the locals, and whose profits go directly to the missions.
