Pope at Audience: Hypocrisy jeopardises the unity of the Church

  The Vatican

Brothers and sisters, good morning!

The Letter to the Galatians reports a rather surprising fact. As we have heard, Paul says that he reproached Cephas, or Peter, in front of the community at Antioch, since his behaviour was not that good. What had happened that was so serious that Paul felt obliged to address Peter in such harsh terms? Perhaps Paul was exaggerating, allowing his character to get in the way without knowing how to control himself? … Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 26th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Thess 3, 7-13
Psalm: 89 (90), 3-4.12-13.14 & 17

Gospel: Mt 24, 42-51

In those days, Jesus told his disciples: “Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions.

But if that wicked slave says to himself, “My master is delayed,’ and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth… Read more »

First Reading: 1 Thess 2, 9-13
Psalm: 138 (139), 7-8.9-10.11-12ab

Gospel: Mt 23, 27-32

In those days, Jesus said “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Mass on the memorial of St Bartholomew

Read more »

With a sincere heart – Bishop Galea-Curmi

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Il-kelma ‘ipokrezija’ ġejja minn kelma Griega li tfisser: tagħmel xena, tirreċta, tieħu sehem fit-teatrin. Maż-żmien, fit-teatrin kienu jagħmlu maskra – mhux bħal dik li qed nużaw bħalissa minħabba l-pandemija, imma maskra biex tgħatti l-wiċċ, u turi wiċċ b’ieħor, wiċċ differenti minn dak li jkollok.

Ġesù lill-Fariżej u lill-kittieba – almenu lil ħafna minnhom – jgħidilhom “uċuħ b’oħra”. Jgħidilhom li dak li huma jagħmlu minn barra hu mod, imma dak li hemm f’qalbhom hu differenti… Read more »
