• In 2018 the Archdiocese of Malta, that includes more than 100 entities and employs more than 1,200 people, registered a marginal deficit of €137,000. In the previous year, the Archdiocese had registered a surplus of €370,000.

This was announced during a press conference at Dar Ġesù Nazzarenu in Żejtun, where works are being carried out so that the shelter for victims of domestic violence run by the Church, is transferred from Dar Qalb ta’ Ġesù to this residence. This is due to structural works which will be starting in the coming weeks so that the property in Ħamrun, having an estimated value of €8 million, is transformed into a complex for palliative care run by The Hospice Movement.

The financial results for 2018 show that the deficit registered is the result of an increase of €3.41 million in expenditure in salaries as a result of more full-time employees, primarily in homes for persons with disability, in schools, and in the Archbishop’s Curia. A total of €4 million was spent on capital projects that include conservation and restoration of ecclesiastical heritage. Donations, mostly by parishes, towards charitable action for people in need reached €562,000. The annual tax charge of the Archdiocese amounts to €1.38 million, an increase of €267,000 from the previous year.

The income for 2018 increased by €2.2 million. For the second consecutive year, collections in parishes and donations increased marginally. The contributions from the Government, that include the funding of the salaries of teachers in the Sacred Heart and Seminary schools, and for other services offered by the Church through Caritas and the children’s homes, increased by €1.8 million.

The Administrative Secretary of the Archdiocese of Malta, Mr Michael Pace Ross, announced that with effect from 1 January 2019, a new agreement has been signed with the Government. This will help to finance the operations of the homes for the elderly. A substantial investment is also planned for Dar Sant’Anna in Senglea. Work is also being carried out on projects partially funded by the European Union. Mr Pace Ross spoke about several green initiatives taken by the Archdiocese, that include the installation of photovoltaic panels and the introduction of a waste management policy in the Curia central offices.

The Archbishop’s Curia registered a deficit of €1.38 million following the distribution of subsidies of nearly a million euro to Church entities.

The Archbishop’s Curia registered a deficit of €1.38 million following the distribution of subsidies of nearly a million euro to Church entities. The subsidies given by the Curia to the homes of the elderly in which 353 people reside, doubled to a total of €436,000. This was due to the increase in operations and capital investment in these homes. Subsidies were also given to the children’s homes of the Church run by Fondazzjoni Sebħ, that provide accommodation and therapy to 60 children and 15 adults including victims of domestic violence. For the first time ever, a subsidy was given to the Cana Movement. On the other hand, the Archdiocese registered a decrease in subsidies given to the Church media services and to the Foundation for Theological Studies. Operational costs of the Curia decreased by 11% even though an increase in donations to people in need was registered, including donations from the Archbishop’s Charity Fund. The income of the Curia decreased by €1.46 million notwithstanding the increased income from investments owing to the higher dividend from APS Bank, that impacted the tax charge.
