STATEMENT BY THE MALTESE DOMINICAN PROVINCE REGARDING

FR MARK MONTEBELLO O.P. AND HIS PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL MEDIA

From time to time, Fr Mark Montebello OP, a Dominican priest, is invited to discussion programmes on radio or TV.   He is also a regular contributor to local papers.

Unfortunately, on various occasions, his views tend to offend the sentiments of many, particularly, but not only, of practising Catholics,  either because the views expressed do not always conform to the official teaching of the Catholic Church or because of lack of sensitivity shown when dealing with certain issues.

In this context, the Maltese Dominican Province of St Pius V, after consultations with the Local Church Authorities, declares that:

–           It regrets any confusion and anger caused by the views aired, in  any form whatsoever, by  Fr Mark Montebello OP;

–          It disassociates itself from the views expressed by Fr Mark Montebello OP when these are not in line with the official teachings of the Catholic Church or with any of its policies;

–          It is taking steps to ensure that Fr Mark Montebello OP recognizes and shoulders better his responsibilities as a Dominican priest.

At the same time, the Maltese Dominican Province of St Pius V, does not wish  to refrain from showing its  great appreciation towards  other initiatives taken by the same Fr Mark Montebello OP, particularly those relating to the marginalized, detained and victims of criminality.
