  • Message by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna

  • St Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina

    19th May 2019

First of all, I would like to thank the extraordinary artists Lydia Buttigieg, Alex Abela, Karen Cremona and Fiona Cauchi.

… a portion of tonight’s donations to assist the widow and children of our brother who was killed simply because he was black.

I would like to thank APS Bank for sponsoring this event, most especially the Chairman Mr Frederick Mifsud Bonnici, and you all for your wonderful presence here today and also for your generosity. This music serves to heal our spirit because it lifts us up, soothes us and shows us that beauty will save the world, and it will save it! Alas, there is also ugliness in this world, most especially the ugliness of hatred. With your permission, I would like to use part of tonight’s donations to assist the widow and children of our brother who was killed simply because he was black.

You understand that I cannot give a pittance to this widow and these children, so please be generous. We must make an effort so that our solidarity will be tangible. These children had a father who chose to live among us so that he would be able to provide for his family, and he was killed instead. In actual fact, we killed him. Therefore, it has now become our responsibility to look after his children since they no longer have a father.

I thank you most heartily and I thank these artists once more. It was Dr Lydia Buttigieg’s idea [to organise this concert]. Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to listen to these much-loved melodies performed to such a high standard. We must also commit ourselves to have music of calibre, both in our liturgical celebrations and in our events, because God deserves our very best.

Thank you for your attendance and for your generosity.

    Charles J. Scicluna
         Archbishop of Malta
