• Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna has appointed Mro Hamish Dustagheer as ‘Maestro di Cappella’ of the Metropolitan Cathedral. This appointment follows a public call for applications. The ‘Maestro di Cappella’ is to prepare and direct the music and choir during liturgical celebrations at the Metropolitan Cathedral and St John’s Co-Cathedral. He is also to promote liturgical music in the Archdiocese of Malta. Mro Dustagheer will take up the post on Ash Wednesday 2017.

Born in 1992, prize-winning pianist and organist Hamish Dustagheer studied at the Royal College of Music, London, graduating in 2014 with first-class honours. He studied with Gordon Fergus-Thompson (concert pianist) and Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin (Organiste Titulaire Adjointe of Saint-Sulpice, Paris). During his time at Royal College he achieved examination and competition success, as well as obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music.

  • In summer 2016, Hamish completed postgraduate studies with distinction from the University of Oxford, where he read for an MPhil in Music at New College. He specialised in performance, whilst also researching the influence of Solesmes on Catholic church music in early twentieth century England, under the supervision of Professor Robert Quinney.

Having held posts in many leading Catholic churches, Hamish now enjoys a reputation as one of England’s foremost Catholic organists and improvisers, playing regularly in the great churches and cathedrals across Europe. He is currently Titular Organist of Quarr Abbey, Organist and Choral Director of Blackfriars, Oxford, and Organist of Campion Hall, Oxford – a unique position, simultaneously serving Benedictine, Dominican and Jesuit foundations respectively.
