Budget 2023: A Crucial Moment of Choice

A Summary of the Reaction by the Justice and Peace Commission

The Justice and Peace Commission appreciates that the 2023 Budget is a budget heavily conditioned by multiple crises.

While welcoming the numerous social measures announced, the Commission wishes to go beyond a simplistic commentary of individual budgetary measures, by inviting the Government to take on board four guiding principles that the Commission believes should serve as a guiding light in our choice of a socio-economic model which results in a more just, sustainable and reconciled society.

Mgr Savio Hon Tai-Fai appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta

Today, Monday 24th October 2022, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed His Excellency Mgr Savio Hon Tai-Fai SDB, Titular Archbishop of Sila and currently Apostolic Nuncio in Greece, as the new Apostolic Nuncio in Malta.

The Archbishop’s Palace opens its doors for Notte Bianca

  Many churches will be open to the public

The Archbishop’s Palace in Valletta will be opening its doors again for Notte Bianca on Saturday 1st October 2022. On the day, visitors will be able to visit various halls in the palace, including the Throne Room on the piano nobile, as well as the Tribunal Chancery with its historic cabinets and ceiling painting. Church Schools welcome back all students and educators

Matul dawn il‑jiem ’il fuq minn 16,000 student u iktar minn 3,000 edukatur qed jerġgħu lura fl‑iskejjel tal‑Knisja għal sena skolastika b’tamiet imġedda. Contingency plan for St Albert the Great College

The Archdiocese of Malta is preparing a contingency plan to cater for students and staff of St Albert the Great College within its educational structures should the school not be in a position to function at the beginning of the 2022/23 scholastic year. 

The Archdiocese, through its Secretariat for Catholic Education, has for several weeks been actively involved in talks aimed at identifying a way forward acceptable to all parties following the decision by the Dominican Order — which owns and operates the college — to dismiss its former headmaster but is disappointed to note that the issue has not been resolved just days ahead of the new term… Read more »

Indifference that kills

The Justice and Peace Commission urges Malta’s authorities and politicians to prioritise the saving of lives and refrain from using language that fans the flames of indifference following the unnecessary death of a four-year-old girl who tragically lost her life in Malta’s Search and Rescue Area.

The young girl, Loujin, died because action by the competent authorities to save the lives of 60 people stranded at sea — who had left Lebanon 10 days earlier — came too late… Read more »
