The year beginning today promises to be the busiest yet for Benedict XVI’s pontificate, as the almost-83-year-old-Pope is planning four international trips and a synod on the Middle East.

€617,585 were raised yesterday during the New Year’s Open Day organised by Radio RTK for the Dar tal-Providenza in Siggiewi. This was the largest sum ever collected in fourteen annual editions. During the day, huge crowds filled the big tent in the parking lot of the Home. The Director, Fr Martin Micallef, thanked the hundred of volunteers who helped organise this Open Day, and most of all the Maltese people, including Maltese emigrants who generously gave their donations and who once again expressed their values of solidarity and generosity with the Dar tal-Providenza… Read more »
On New Year’s day, in the Archbishop’s Palace, Valletta, Archbishop Paul Cremona OP, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Mercieca and Bishop Annetto Depasquale welcomed the representatives of civil authorities and constituted bodies to exchange greetings for the New Year, 2010.

On January 1st 2010, Dar tal-Providenza in Siggiewi will host thousands of people for the next Open Day organized by Radio RTK to collect funds for the Home. The live television broadcast will start at 9.00am with Holy Mass from the chapel of the Home and will continue up to just after midnight when the total sum collected during the day will be announced… Read more »
The International Catholic Union of the Press is underlining the media’s role in building economic justice, and is calling on journalists to serve humanity and creation, rather than individual agendas. The union affirmed this in a document titled “Media for Social and Economic Justice,” published this week in order to “emphasize the importance and role of journalism in finding lasting solutions to problems we all face worldwide.”

Benedict XVI, while highlighting key events of this year, noted that 2009 has “passed largely under the sign of Africa.”
The Pope affirmed this today when he had his traditional exchange of Christmas greetings with prelates and members of the Roman Curia. The Pontifical Mission for Palestine, a Papal agency for Middle East relief and development, celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. This Holy See agency was founded in 1949 as a “temporary” solution to help Palestinian refugees until their situation could be resolved. The anniversary celebration was held last month in the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center.
