The Archdiocese of Malta confirms that a report was filed with the Żurrieq Police Station and that an investigation is underway following the theft of a number of relics from the Parish Church of St Leonard the Abbot in Ħal Kirkop.
The relics were kept in the reliquary behind the church’s main altar, which showed no signs of forced entry. After it was verified that the relics were missing and had not been moved elsewhere within the church, the parish priest filed a police report, as required of him in such circumstances.
The Archdiocese condemns this sacrilegious and criminal act and joins the parish priest of Ħal Kirkop in his heartfelt appeal for the relics to be returned to the Church.
