Birth of Saint John the Baptist – Solemnity
Readings of the day

First Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6
Psalm: 138:1-3,13-15
Second Reading: Acts 13:22-26

Gospel: Luke 1:57-66,80

Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.” They said to her, “None of your relatives has this name.”

Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God.

Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel… Read more »

Overcoming fear – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Hemm kelma li Ġesù jirrepetiha tliet darbiet f’dan l-Evanġelju tal-lum biex jagħti messaġġ qawwi lill-appostli tiegħu: “la tibżgħux” (Mt 10:26.28). Jgħidha u jirrepetiha, u jerġa’ jgħid “xejn la tibżgħu” (Mt 10:31).

Kien qed jitkellem ma’ nies – l-appostli – li kellhom bżonn jisimgħu dal-kliem. Ġesù kien qed jitkellem ħafna qabel il-Passjoni tiegħu, imma fil-Passjoni tiegħu, fil-mument l-aktar diffiċli għal Ġesù, kważi l-appostli kollha kienu se jaħarbu u jħalluh waħdu, għax maħkumin mill-biża’.

Imma dawn in-nies fehmu aktar ’il quddiem dak li Ġesù kien qed jgħidilhom hawnhekk: li l-qawwa tal-Ispirtu ta’ Alla, minn nies li jibżgħu, kienet se tibdilhom f’nies li jegħlbu l-biża’… Read more »

Who am I to judge? – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa, Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Il-kelma li jgħid Ġesù “tiġġudikawx” (Mt 7:1), hi kelma li spiss nisimgħuha. Niftakru meta l-Papa Franġisku kien qal, darba: “Jien min jien biex niġġudika?” – u din daret mad-dinja kollha, qisu mhux l-istess kliem li qal Ġesù! Dan għaliex ħafna drabi, meta nisimgħu dil-kelma, inħalltu l-affarijiet u ma nifhmux sewwa x’qed jgħid Ġesù kif inhu ċar hawnhekk. X’qed jgħid Ġesù, l-ewwel nett, meta jgħidilna ma niġġudikawx?  Qed jgħid li meta aħna nħarsu lejn persuna, u kif din hi quddiem Alla, aħna ma għandniex niġġudikawha jew niġġudikaw il-qalb tagħha, imma għandna nħallu l-ġudizzju f’idejn Alla… Read more »

Psalm: 47 (48):2-3a,3b-4,10-11

Gospel: Matthew 7:6,12-14

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many… Read more »

Our Lady of the Lily: a flower for our time – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

Mass on the feast of Our Lady of the Lily

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, Imqabba

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Inġbarna biex nagħtu ġieħ lill-Madonna tal-Ġilju, titlu sabiħ tal-Verġni Mqaddsa Marija, li jeħodna direttament fil-qalba tal-Evanġelju. Il-ġilju mhuwiex fjura qawwija. Ma jiddominax il-pajsaġġ. Ma jimponi ruħu fuq ħadd. U madankollu, is-sbuħija, is-safa u l-fwieħa tiegħu għamluh wieħed mis-simboli l-aktar għeżież fit-tradizzjoni Nisranija.

Meta l-Knisja tqiegħed il-ġilju ma’ Marija, tkun qed tgħidilna xi ħaġa importanti dwar min hi Marija, u dwar min aħna msejħin inkunu… Read more »

That which remains – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa, Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

Ritratt: Ian Noel Pace – Arċidjoċesi ta’ Malta L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Ftit ġranet ilu kien hemm l-aħbar li għall-ewwel darba hemm bniedem iddikjarat uffiċjalment triljunarju. X’ikun triljunarju? Aħna nafu li hemm min hu miljunarju, biljunarju; u triljunarju  jfisser li jkollok tnax-il żero wara l-ewwel numru.

Din kienet aħbar li għamlet naqra agħa. Imma meta naqraw dal-kliem ta’ Ġesù, nindunaw kemm bniedem jista’ jkollu, u jkollu ħafna, imma l-aktar importanti mhuwiex dan fil-ħajja, anzi wieħed irid joqgħod attent fejn jidħol il-flus, il-ġid, u l-proprjetà… Read more »

Thanksgiving and Joy – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass at the inauguration of the restoration of St Joseph's Chapel

  The Archbishop’s Palace, Valletta

Photo: Ian Noel Pace – Archdiocese of Malta Homily by Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi

Today is a day of thanksgiving and joy. We gather to celebrate the restoration and inauguration of this small chapel, dedicated to Saint Joseph, in the Archbishop’s Palace – a sacred place that has witnessed prayer, silence, and the faithful service of generations.

The Chapel project draws attention to two Bishops of Malta – the Maltese Bishop Baldassare Cagliares, who built the palace and its chapel in 1622, commissioning a little-known but important artist to paint the titular altar painting of The Holy Family with the young St John the Baptist; and the French Bishop Paul Alpheran de Bussan, whose aesthetic sensibilities led him in the 1730s to update the archiepiscopal palace in the High Baroque idiom.

Through the care and dedication of expert hands and minds, and the patronage of a French donor, Madame Marie-Amèlie Gleizes-Dewavrin – to whom we are so grateful – the beauty of this chapel has been renewed… Read more »
