They go hand in hand – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Fi żmien Ġesù, l-għorrief tal-liġi kienu jħobbu jiddiskutu l-liġi, u d-dettalji tagħha. U fl-Evanġelju tal-lum riedu jdaħħlu lil Ġesù f’diskussjoni dwar liema hu l-kmandament il-kbir fil-liġi, fost il-ħafna li kellhom. Riedu lil Ġesù jagħżel wieħed.

X’jagħmel Ġesù? Ħa fil-fatt tnejn, kif smajna fl-Evanġelju – wieħed li nsibuh fil-ktieb tad-Dewteronomju u l-ieħor fil-ktieb tal-Levitiku. L-ewwel wieħed: “Ħobb lill-Mulej Alla tiegħek b’qalbek kollha, b’ruħek kollha u b’moħħok kollu”; dan hu l-ewwel u l-akbar kmandament… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 21st August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Ruth 2, 1-3.8-11; 4, 13-17
Psalm: 127 (128), 1-2.3.4.5

Gospel: Mt 23, 1-12

In those days, Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honour at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi.

But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

In those days, when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”

He said to him, ” “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

The Lord invites everyone – The Archbishop

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Il-Kelma ta’ Alla llum hi impenjattiva ħafna. Ta’ min jinnota li din il-parabbola Ġesù jgħidha lil kategorija partikolari ta’ nies. Kellem lill-kbarat tal-qassisin u lill-Fariżej (ara Mt 21:45). Huma n-nies li kienu jafu l-liġi, in-nies li kellhom il-kult f’idejhom, il-poter reliġjuż f’idejhom.

Qed jinsisti magħhom li donnhom irċevew l-istedina għall-festa tat-tieġ, għall-festa ta’ mħabba u kulħadd kellu x’jagħmel, kulħadd qal ‘le’… Read more »
