In those days, Jesus told his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.

For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? … Read more »

Breaking the cycle of hatred – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Faċli fil-ħajja nirraġunaw, kif semma Ġesù hawnhekk fl-Evanġelju, “għajn b’għajn u sinna b’sinna”. Kważi tiġi naturali li meta nirċievu azzjoni ħażina, irridu npattu b’azzjoni ħażina. Ġesù kien jaf li n-nies kienu midħla ta’ dan, għalhekk jgħidilhom: “Smajtu xi ntqal…”

Imma li kultant ninsew, anke meta nitkellmu fuq dan, hu li fit-Testment il-Qadim “għajn b’għajn u sinna b’sinna” ma kinitx tfisser: jekk xi ħadd għamillek azzjoni ħażina, qis li tpattihielu b’azzjoni ħażina… Read more »

Pope at Angelus: Discover the presence of God in our lives

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno!

The two parables, which the Liturgy presents us today, – the two parables –  are inspired precisely by ordinary life and reveal the attentive and deep gaze of Jesus, who observes reality and, through small everyday images, opens the windows on the mystery of God and on the succession of human events. Jesus spoke in a way that was easy to understand; he spoke with images of reality, of everyday life… Read more »

Psalm: 97 (98), 1.2-3ab.3cd-4

Gospel: Mt 5, 38-42

In those days, Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer.

But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.  Read more »

The value of ordinary life – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Ma nafx jekk qatt rajtux żerriegħa tal-mustarda. Hi żerriegħa tassew żgħira. Ġesù jgħid fl-Evanġelju llum, li hi: “l-iċken fost iż-żrieragħ kollha tal-art”. Għalhekk jolqotna l-fatt li Ġesù jxebbah is-Saltna ta’ Alla ma’ żerriegħa, u b’mod partikulari ma’ żerriegħa tal-mustarda.  Meta nisimgħu l-kelma ‘saltna’, l-ewwel ma jiġi f’moħħna hi xi ħaġa kbira, imma Ġesù jgħid li s-Saltna ta’ Alla tixbah lill-iktar ħaġa żgħira, li bil-mod il-mod tikber u tiżviluppa… Read more »

The need to learn to wait patiently for the seed to grow – The Archbishop

The Church of Saint Ubdaldesca, Paola

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

San Mark jipprova jispjegalna għaliex Ġesù, meta kien jitkellem, juża t-tixbihat, il-parabboli. Hu jgħid li kien jagħmel hekk biex ikunu jistgħu jifhmuh. L-eżempji li Ġesù juża waqt li qiegħed jitkellem mal-bdiewa ġejjin proprju minn dik id-dinja: taż-żera’ tal-ħsad. Kemm-il-darba jitkellem fuq in-nagħaġ, fuq is-siġar, u fuq l-ambjent ta’ madwarna. L-għajn ta’ Ġesù kienet tosserva ħafna u hekk jagħmel illum biex jagħtina żewġ lezzjonijiet importanti ħafna… Read more »

The Sunday Gospel: 13th June

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of the day

First Reading: Ezek 17, 22-24
Salm: 91(92), 2-3,13-14,15-16
Second Reading: 2 Cor 5, 6-10

Gospel: Mk 4, 26-34

In those days, Jesus said to the crowd: “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”

He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.  Read more »
