The titular painting of the Martyrdom of St Catherine housed at Żejtun’s old parish church – also known as St Gregory’s Church – has been restored.
The restoration project was inaugurated on 17 November.
During the event, Valentina Lupo, restorer with the Atelier del Restauro, which had been entrusted with the restoration of the painting, gave a presentation detailing the work and the procedures involved in bringing the painting back to its original vibrancy.
Sandro Debono delivered a talk about his ongoing research into the origins of the painting.
The event featured Mro Joseph Caruana, who played various pieces throughout the evening, while Anthony Spagnol compered.
The church was lit only by candlelight, which not only enhanced the beautiful architecture and intimate atmosphere, but also served to keep the painting in darkness until the moment when it was lit up for the audience to enjoy its fully restored glory.
The honour of turning on the spotlights fell to the Archdeacon of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mdina, Mgr. Joseph Bajada, Archpriest Fr. Nicholas Pace and Architect Ruben Abela, President of Wirt iz-Zejtun.
Wirt iż-Żejtun said this was one of its many projects intended to enhance the cultural and historical riches of Żejtun.
