Fondazzjoni Sebħ, an entity of the Church in Malta, officially launched The Manor – its first transitional residence for youth leaving care. Since the formation of the aftercare services in 2023, the team have been supporting youth in preparation for this transition and even after they have moved to the community.

The opening of the first semi-independent residence is an important milestone for the service as this space aims to welcome youth leaving care who are pursuing education and employment. “It will create a fair opportunity for youth who have faced great hardship in their childhood, to build a more stable start to adult life, with adequate support and care,” explained Kerry Hermitage, family services senior manager.

The new premises has been converted into a space that is youthful, dignified and modern, to ensure a welcoming and inspiring psychological and physical environment. The Manor balances individualised studios for its residents, with common areas that encourage personal development and community living. The kitchen, dining area, games room, gym area, living area, library, work from home space and garden, were all designed specifically for the needs of the youths and more importantly to remind them that they are valued and cared for, even beyond the age of 18.

To mark this significant milestone, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi blessed the residence and thanked the Ursuline Sisters who passed over the management of this property to Fondazzjoni Sebħ.

“For us, as a church, it is a great day because every new initiative we take to empower people, to include them and help them grow is special. It’s an expression of our care for each and every person, because for us, every human being should find the care they need to move on in the journey of life.”

The Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights, Dr Michael Falzon, having been a supporter of this project from the beginning, also shared his thoughts. He mentioned having fond memories of the place when he visited as an altar boy and remarked on the excellent relationship there is with the Church and Sebħ.

“After all, we are all stakeholders in the same society. That is the most important thing, and the most important thing you can do is nurture. When we work together the role becomes easier and we take less time to reach our goal. To the residents, it’s our duty – all of us – to provide you the best opportunities to reach your goals. So please take that opportunity. There is nothing more satisfactory than someone saying, ‘You made a difference in my life.’”

Several benefactors who contributed to the conversion of the physical space were present during the event. Whether by means of volunteering through corporate social responsibility or through donations in-kind or monetary, their contribution was highlighted on the day as being pivotal to the success of this renovation.

Fondazzjoni Sebħ echoed its gratitude to all involved in helping to get this project off the ground. It equally highlighted its pride in the aftercare team whose care and dedication are at the heart of this project, and to the current residents who were such a special part of this journey. This was also reflected in two of the residents’ shared experiences.

“I’ve come a long way in this place. If you told me a year ago to be hopeful about my future, I wouldn’t have believed you. But slowly things started to feel very different in a good way. This house became more than just a place to live in. It became a place where you support us, listen to us and encourage us to step out of our comfort zone. You always make time for us even when things are very busy and that support really means the world to us. So today I just want to thank everyone who has been part of this journey. For the first time in a very long time, I look forward to what comes next,” said the resident.

Another resident explained how growing up in the system was difficult, especially when it came to relationships. “I struggled with trust… Because of the team, I feel more confident in connecting with others and building healthy, respectful relationships. I’m truly grateful for the difference you’ve made in my life!”
