• The second day of the CCEE meeting in Malta started with the media officials sharing and discussing their experiences on how they dealt with crisis situations related to economic and transparency issues, child and sexual abuse, refugee arrivals and the relationship with the institutions.

Dr Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, spoke about the ongoing process of reforming the Vatican’s communications structure and suggested tools for working together to continue the mission of the Church.

Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, President of the Maltese Bishops’ Conference and Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, delivered the third presentation of the CCEE meeting and reflected on the four-day Protection of Minors in the Church summit which took place in the Vatican last February. He explained the Church’s new procedural rules to combat sexual abuse established in Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter Vos estis lux mundi.

Mgr Scicluna also recalled the touching and powerful experiences of meeting victims of sexual abuse by members of the clergy and emphasized the suffering of those victims and the need to treat them with compassion and respect.

Following Archbishop Scicluna’s contribution, the delegates proceeded with a visit to St Paul’s Grotto in Rabat and Mass at St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina.
