Pastoral Letter for Lent 2023

“I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). Jesus poses this question to Martha, sister to Lazarus and Mary, three of Jesus’s closest friends. The Gospel we have just heard today clearly shows that Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus very much.

Clergy to meet funeral corteges at church rather than morgue

The Archdiocese of Malta has decided that from next month clergy will receive funeral processions at the church door, where a blessing will take place before the Mass, instead of accompanying corteges from the morgue to the funeral service.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese said: “The bishops have taken this difficult decision, after consultation with parish priests, due to the declining number of clergy in parishes, increasingly lengthy travel times and a long-felt need for priests to be present in church before the funeral service takes place to console relatives and friends as well as hear confessions.”

Priests will continue to be available when loved ones pass away, either in a residence or in hospital, and will also continue to take part in the procession from the church to the cemetery where burial takes place… Read more »

Archdiocese of Malta employees offered a special scheme by APS Bank

The Archdiocese of Malta has signed an agreement with APS Bank plc whereby its employees can enjoy special terms and other benefits with respect to a suite of APS Bank products and services.

Two new parish priests and one archpriest appointed

Three new parish priests have been appointed for Ħaż-Żabbar Parish, Paola Parish, and Birkirkara’s Santa Marija church.

Invitation for all Catholics in Malta

As a way of expressing the unity in diversity of the Catholic faith, Archbishop Charles Scicluna is celebrating Mass in English for all Catholics who speak different languages but make Malta their home to celebrate their beautiful diversity while sharing in the unity of the Eucharist.

843 boxes of essential items from parishes in Malta for Turkey and Syria

On Sunday 12 February 2023, 843 boxes of essential items were collected from the parishes in Malta for the people of Turkey and Syria. The items included 97 blankets and 12 heaters and took 17 trips by van to be transported to the Civil Protection Department. The initiative was coordinated by the Archdiocese of Malta through the Social Works Foundation and the work of more than 100 volunteers… Read more »
