Asked by a journalist, here in Asuncion, during the final press briefing, what he thinks is the main common denominator of Pope Francis’ three-nation Latin American tour, Papal spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi didn’t have to think too hard.

No, he didn’t say “the appeal for justice and equality,” “closeness to the poor and the needy” or “the call to leaders to combat corruption”; he didn’t even talk about the strong Marian dimension of the journey or about Pope Francis’ embracing pastoral approach as he reached out to millions of faithful during massive Eucharistic celebrations, private moments of prayer, encounters with his fellow bishops and with representatives of civil society…

Pope Francis began the second leg of his trip in Latin America yesterday, as he arrived at El Alto airport, the highest on the planet, situated at more than four thousand metres above sea level, in La Paz, Bolivia, where he was awaited by the president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Evo Morales, the country’s first leader to come from the indigenous population (Wru-Aimara), whom the Holy Father met in the Vatican during the First World Meeting of Popular Movements, organised by the Pontifical Council “Justice and Peace” in October 2014…

Pope Francis travelled from Ecuador to Bolivia on Wednesday afternoon, at the end of the first leg of his three-country visit to Latin America, and the beginning of the second. Arriving at the “El Alto” airport in La Paz, Pope Francis began his Apostolic Voyage to Bolivia by invoking “peace and prosperity upon all the people of this country.” In his address at the welcome ceremony, the Holy Father said, “As a guest and a pilgrim, I have come to confirm the faith of those who believe in the Risen Christ, so that, during our pilgrimage on earth, we believers may be witnesses of his love, leaven for a better world and co-operators in the building of a more just and fraternal society.” Pope Francis said that during his Visit he would, “encourage the vocation of Christ’s disciples to share the joy of the Gospel to be salt for the earth and light to the world.” Following the welcome ceremony, the Holy Father visited privately with Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales, before meeting in La Paz cathedral with Bolivian civil authorities and representatives of culture and civil society…
