The Sunday Gospel: 23rd January

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of the day

First Reading: Neh 8, 2-4a. 5-6. 8-10

Second Reading: 1 Cor 12, 12-30

Gospel: Lk 1, 1-4; 4, 14-21

Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.

Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom… Read more »

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Sejjaħ lejh lil dawk li ried”. Hekk naqraw fl-Evanġelju skont San Mark fl-għażla tat-tnax-il appostlu li għamel Ġesù. Hawnhekk għandna isimhom wieħed wieħed, u San Mark jispiċċa b’Ġuda l-Iskarjota “dak li ttradieh”.

Hi għażla misterjuża din ta’ Ġesù. Ma marx it-tempju jagħżel lil xi ħadd mill-għorrief u lanqas jidher li fittex nies ta’ qdusija kbira. Imma sejjaħ lejh lil dawn, u meta naraw l-ismijiet u iktar ’il quddiem naqraw fuq dawn l-appostli, nindunaw li sejjaħ lejh nies midinba u b’ħafna limitazzjonijiet u difetti… Read more »

The “new” that Jesus gives us – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Fi żmien Ġesù, kien hemm tliet prattiċi reliġjużi komuni ħafna għal dawk li jemmnu: it-talb, l-għoti ta’ karità u s-sawm. Kienu diġà qabel fit-Testment il-Qadim, kienu fi żmien Ġesù, u baqgħu mbagħad fil-ħajja tal-Knisja, u għadhom ukoll illum prattiċi importanti ħafna għal min jemmen.

Iżda x’kien jiġri kultant, u jista’ jiġri anke llum? Li dawn jitqiesu bħala obbligi – għandek tagħmilhom – jew li tagħmilhom biex tidher li qed tagħmel it-tajjeb, u kultant in-nies kienu jinsew li l-ispirtu li għandu jmexxi dak li jagħmlu hu dak tal-imħabba lejn Alla u lejn l-oħrajn… Read more »

A heartfelt presence – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Omm Ġesù kienet hemm”. Dan id-dettall hu l-ewwel wieħed li jagħtina San Ġwann meta jitkellem dwar it-tieġ f’Kana tal-Galilija. Jgħidilna mill-ewwel li Marija, Omm Ġesù, kienet preżenti. Qisu mill-bidu jrid jindika li din il-preżenza se tagħmel differenza kbira f’dan it-tieġ. Marija tissemma qabel Ġesù, li l-Evanġelju jgħid li kien preżenti wkoll mad-dixxipli tiegħu.

Nixtieq li nħarsu ftit lejn din il-ġrajja tat-tieġ ta’ Kana, u naraw Marija f’dan it-tieġ, u x’tgħidilna hi għall-ħajja tagħna… Read more »
