On Monday 14th March 2022, the St Aloysius College Secondary School community of students and members of staff participated in a special community activity, as an expression of solidarity and support for those struggling as a result of the war in Ukraine. The activity took place in the Secondary School/Sports Complex Grounds.
Following a student march-past featuring the Ukrainian flag and music, the Secondary School’s educational community gathered in the sports grounds to physically form the Ukraine national flag and a symbolic heart.
Students were grouped according to their division and given a blue or yellow-coloured sheet of paper to hold above their heads, while the drone hovered above capturing footage of the formations. Parents/guardians were invited to observe the activity from the Sports Complex Balcony.
Rector Fr Jimmy Bartolo sj addressed the school community, highlighting the purpose of this activity: “The aim of our solidarity campaign with the people of Ukraine is to raise awareness of the devastating effects of war and to work for peace. Students, parents, and members of staff organised different events in the three schools to pray for peace and to take concrete actions which shows solidarity with those who are suffering. We cannot remain spectators to what is happening in Ukraine and Russia. We also need to remember other wars and conflicts including those in Syria, Yemen and other countries.”
Ms Mary Bonnici Xuereb, Assistant Chaplain, also read a lovely message inspired by Pope Francis’ call for world peace, along with St Francis of Assisi’s prayer.
