The Secretariat for Catholic Education (SfCE) and the Church Schools Association (CSA) disapprove of unnecessary alarm caused by the Union of Professional Educators’ sweeping statements, which cast doubt on the work carried out by those involved.
SfCE and CSA confirm that all educators have been paid in accordance with the applicable collective agreement and the agreed parameters governing salaries, salary placement and arrears payments.
Furthermore, between January and August 2026, the salaries of all LSEs and kindergarten educators (KGEs) were revisited and readjusted, and additional arrears due were paid in September 2026, following updated directions from the relevant authorities.
This was done in agreement with the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT), the trade union with collective bargaining authority for educational grades.
SfCE and CSA protect the principles enshrined in the 1991 Agreement between the Republic of Malta and the Holy See.
The UPE’s statement creates unwarranted concern among all educators, when the reported discrepancies concern specific groups within the LSE and KGE grades.
Over recent weeks, concerns raised on the matter led SfCE to make further enquiries with the Ministry for Education and the MUT. Discussions are currently under way to clarify and ensure that calculations reflect agreed parameters and that the parity principle is consistently upheld. Church Authorities state that should there be any discrepancies, they will be addressed.
SfCE and CSA note the work done within the Church Schools Sector in the computation of salaries and any due arrears, including the individual workings distributed to each employee.
This mechanism allows individuals to track their own earnings. Should these workings need to be revisited, Church Authorities will communicate and act accordingly.
