180 persons left Malta yesterday to start the annual four-day pilgrimage to Lourdes for Maltese patients, organised by the Maltese Association for the Transport of the Sick to Lourdes (UMTAL).

This pilgrimage is led by Fr Joe Mizzi, UMTAL’s spiritual director, along with four other priests who will provide spiritual guidance to the patients and pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage.

A dedicated medical team comprising five doctors, eight nurses, three pharmacists, and a radiographer will ensure that the 50 Maltese patients receive continuous and attentive care during the trip.

This year’s group also includes 72 volunteers: 25 participating for the first time, 9 returning for their second experience, and 38 seasoned volunteers who have supported the pilgrimage over the years.

Together, patients, volunteers and pilgrims will share a deeply moving experience of faith and compassion in Lourdes. They will participate in various religious activities, including the International Mass and another in Maltese followed by the Via Crucis, Eucharistic Adoration and the evening torchlight procession known as Aux Flambeaux.

Since 1931, UMTAL has made this pilgrimage possible for individuals who, due to health challenges, might otherwise be unable to visit this sacred sanctuary. Those interested in joining next year’s pilgrimage can find more information at umtalmalta.org.
