The Archdiocese of Malta categorically rejects the false and misleading claims published by The Shift News in an article titled ‘Anger within Curia over costly conversion of ODZ farmhouse for Archbishop Scicluna’.
The article constructs a narrative that bears little or no resemblance to the facts. A property which is currently not habitable has been falsely portrayed as a venue being used by the Archbishop to host “private gatherings with friends” at weekends. While the Archbishop is vested with the authority to administer Church property, this allegation is entirely untrue. Neither the Archbishop nor any other person has organised or held gatherings at this property.
Information provided to The Shift News by the Curia was selectively interpreted and distorted to fit a preconceived narrative, reflecting a clear agenda rather than any genuine commitment to accurate and responsible journalism.
This approach is consistent with previous reporting of Church-related issues by The Shift News, despite repeated efforts by the Archdiocese to provide clear and factual information.
The decision to renovate this Church-owned property on the outskirts of Rabat was taken to prevent it from falling into further disrepair and potential misuse, including the risk of abandonment or illegal occupation, as has happened in the past.
Claims that the expenditure on these works is “excessive” are unfounded and irresponsible. The interventions being undertaken are necessary works on a property in a poor state of repair. They do not involve luxury finishes, high-end specifications, state-of-the-art facilities or the engagement of interior designers.
Any suggestion that the Archdiocese is indulging in lavish or unnecessary spending is entirely misleading. On the contrary, every effort is being made to contain costs and ensure that only essential works are undertaken.
Several other claims made in the article are likewise false or misleading.
The Archdiocese emphasises that reporting must be grounded in factual accuracy and responsible journalism, and not based on unsubstantiated or misleading allegations aimed at causing reputational harm to the Curia and its leadership.
The Archdiocese will not allow these disgraceful and alarming falsehoods, distortions and insinuations to pass unchallenged, and reserves the right to take further steps to safeguard its reputation.
