Pope Leo: Christ invites us to renew our lives completely

Papal Mass

Basilica of Saint Augustine , Annaba, Algeria

Homily of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

Dear brothers and sisters,

The divine Word pervades history and renews it through the human voice of the Savior. Today we listen to the Gospel, the Good News for all time, in this Basilica in Annaba dedicated to Saint Augustine, Bishop of the ancient city of Hippo.  Over the centuries, the names of the places that welcome us have changed, but the saints continue to serve as our patrons and faithful witnesses of a connection to the land that comes from heaven.  It is precisely this dynamic that the Lord revealed at night to Nicodemus: this is the strength that Christ instills in the weakness of his faith and the tenacity of his search… Read more »

An interdisciplinary group of academics from the University of Malta and senior clinical staff at Mater Dei Hospital is recommending the inclusion of a durable power of attorney for healthcare in Malta’s proposed Advance Medical Directives Act, warning that its omission causes a significant ethical and clinical gap.

In a position paper, the group says that a trusted healthcare proxy provides a more flexible and ethically robust safeguard than a static written directive.

A proxy, they note, can interpret a patient’s wishes in light of unforeseen medical circumstances, which a document drafted years in advance may not adequately anticipate… Read more »

Psalm: 92 (93):1ab,1c-2,5

Gospel: John 3:7b-15

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “’You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can this happen?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? … Read more »

Pope in Algeria: Future belongs to men and women of peace

Visit to the Maqam Echahid Martyrs' Monument, Algeria

Address of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

Dear Algerian brothers and sisters,

Peace be with you! As-salamu alaykum!

I give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to visit your country as the Successor of the Apostle Peter, after having already done so twice as a spiritual son of Saint Augustine. However, I stand before you first and foremost as a brother who is delighted to be able to renew, through this meeting, the bonds of affection that bring our hearts closer together… Read more »

Full support for the Pope who courageously delivers the Word of God – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa, Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Agħmel li l-qaddejja tiegħek ixandru kelmtek bil-kuraġġ kollu” (Atti 4:29). Dan hu li qrajna llum fl-Atti tal-Appostli – din it-talba li għamlu Pietru u Ġwanni u sħabhom, wara li kienu ġew mis-Sinedriju fejn qalulhom: tkomplux ixxandru li Ġesù huwa ħaj. U dawn, meta ltaqgħu flimkien, għamlu din it-talba: biex ikomplu jxandru l-kelma ta’ Alla bil-kuraġġ kollu. Kif, fil-fatt, għamlu, s-silta tispiċċa hekk: “Bdew ixandru l-kelma ta’ Alla bil-kuraġġ kollu” (Atti 4:31)… Read more »

Archbishop says Church in Malta stands behind Holy Father following unjustifiable attack by US President

Photo: Vatican Media

Archbishop Charles Scicluna, like many Catholics around the world, is deeply perturbed by the unrestrained and unjustifiable attack on the Holy Father by the President of the United States.

Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the consistent position of the Church throughout history when he said: “War divides; hope unites. Arrogance tramples upon others; love lifts up. Idolatry blinds us; the living God enlightens.”

The Holy Father spoke the unadulterated truth when he insisted that the Church will always promote peace “even when rejecting the logic of war may lead to misunderstanding and scorn”… Read more »
