The Gospel of the day: 31st August

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:7-13
Psalm: 89 (90):3-4,12-13,14 & 17

Gospel: Matthew 24:42-51

In those days, Jesus told his disciples: “Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. ‘
But if that wicked slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Read more »

Servant of the servants of God – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Il-Parroċċa ta’ San Girgor il-Kbir, Tas Sliema

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Jien ġejt biex ikollkom il-ħajja u l-ħajja bil-kotra” (Ġw 10:10). Din is-sentenza mill-Evanġelju li għadna kif smajna skont San Ġwann, fejn Ġesù jitkellem fuqu nnifsu bħala r-ragħaj it-tajjeb, naraha tiġbor b’mod sabiħ ħafna l-ħajja ta’ San Girgor il-Kbir.

San Girgor għex ħafna snin ilu. Twieled għall-ħabta tas-sena 540. Kien imdaħħal mill-bidu fil-ħajja pubblika, kien minn familja nobbli, mal-ewwel kien impenjat fis-soċjetà fl-amministrazzjoni, u sar prefett ta’ Ruma… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 30th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13
Psalm: 138 (139):7-8,9-10,11-12ab

Gospel: Matthew 23:27-32

Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing… Read more »

Save us from hypocrisy – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Ħażin għalikom, intom il-kittieba u l-Fariżej” (Mt 23:13). Dan hu li Ġesù jirrepeti għal tliet darbiet f’din is-silta mill-Evanġelju skont San Mattew, u din is-silta hi parti minn diskors itwal fejn Ġesù jirrepeti għal diversi drabi “Ħażin għalikom”.  Jolqotna dan il-kliem, għax minn fomm Ġesù ħafna drabi nisimgħu kliem differenti. Niftakru fl-istess Evanġelju skont San Mattew meta lid-dixxipli jgħidilhom “Henjin” (Mt 5:3-11)… Read more »

Readings of the day

First Reading: Jeremiah 1:7-19
Psalm: 70:1-6,15,17

Gospel: Mark 6:17-29

Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.
