The Gospel of the day: 26th July

Readings of the day

First Reading: Exodus 32, 15-24.30-34
Psalm: 105 (106), 19-20.21-22.23

Gospel: Mt 13, 31-35

In those days, Jesus put before the crowd another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

Jesus told the crowds all these things in parables; without a parable he told them nothing. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.”

Wealth in abundance – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Li kieku dan il-miraklu Ġesù għamlu llum, bil-mezzi ta’ komunikazzjoni li għandna, kien ikun wieħed mill-iktar li jissemma ma’ kulħadd u kullimkien – kif jista’ jkun li b’ħames ħobżiet u żewġ ħutiet titma’ ħamest elef ruħ? Kien jiġri, bħalma kultant ġara fi żmien Ġesù, li ħafna jieqfu fuq dak li jistagħġbu bih – miraklu, xi ħaġa kbira – imma mbagħad jitilfu dak li hu l-iktar importanti u essenzjali… Read more »

Mass on the feast of St Anne

The Church of St Anne, Żebbiegħ

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Jiena magħkom dejjem sal-aħħar taż-żmien” (Mt 28:20). Hu dan il-kliem ta’ Ġesù li l-Papa Franġisku għażel bħala tema għall-messaġġ tiegħu fl-okkażjoni tal-ewwel Jum Dinji tan-Nanniet u l-Anzjani li se jiġi ċċelebrat għada b’rabta mal-festa ta’ Sant’Anna u San Ġwakkin li ssir kull sena fis-26 ta’ Lulju. Din hi l-wegħda li Ġesù għamel lid-dixxipli tiegħu qabel tela’ s-sema. Il-Papa ried li jerġa’ jtenni din il-wegħda lin-nanniet u l-anzjani kollha… Read more »

Mass on the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

The Parish Church of St Anne, Marsascala

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Kemm hu sabiħ il-versett li qrajna fis-salm ta’ dan is-17-il Ħadd taż-żmien ta’ matul is-sena: “Iftaħ idek, Mulej, ferraħna bil-ġid li tagħtina” (S144:16). Minn dan il-Ħadd bdejna naqraw kapitlu sabiħ mill-Evanġelju ta’ San Ġwann. Għalkemm il-Ħdud ta’ din is-sena huma ddedikati lill-Evanġelju ta’ San Mark, li huwa Evanġelju qasir, f’dawn il-Ħdud li ġejjin se nieqfu ftit minn San Mark u naqraw minn kapitlu 6 mill-Evanġelju ta’ San Ġwann li jibda propju jibda bir-rakkont ta’ Ġesù li jkattar il-ħobż u l-ħut li offrielu tifel u tema’ 5,000 raġel u lil kull min kien hemm magħhom… Read more »

Closeness, compassion, tenderness

God’s ‘style’ has three traits: “closeness, compassion and tenderness”. These were the words of Pope Francis, during his reflection last Sunday, before the recitation of the Angelus. In these past months, he has consistently mentioned this triad as an expression of God’s style, and urged Christians to give witness to a life that reflects the style of God.

It is Jesus who fully reveals God’s loving heart… Read more »

“I am with you always”

Message by Pope Francis on the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Dear Grandfathers and Grandmothers,

Dear Elderly Friends,

“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends.  “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly… Read more »

The Sunday Gospel: 25th July

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of the day

First Reading: 2 Kings 4, 42-44
Psalm: 144(145), 10-11,15-16,17-18
Second Reading: Eph 4, 1-6

Gospel: Jn 6, 1-15

In those days, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near.

When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish… Read more »

New lighting system for the Archbishop’s Curia façade

Following the rehabilitation works of the main façade of the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana, a new lighting system was inaugurated. This coincided with the feast of St Calcedonius which is being celebrated today (24th July), whose remains are found in the Curia chapel. The restoration of the side façade on Triq Oliver Friggieri (formerly Triq l-Argotti) was also inaugurated.

Overlooking St Calcedonius Square, the building with a wide main frontage, formerly known as Casa della Madonna di Manresa, was originally a one-storey retreat house with a height limit of 24 palmi, as decreed by the Order of the Knights in 1744… Read more »
