The Gospel of the day: 29th December

Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Jn 2, 3-11
Psalm: 95 (96), 1-2a.2b-3.5b-6

Gospel: Lk 2, 22-35

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”, and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Read more »

The murder of innocents never brought any blessings to the world – The Archbishop

Mass on the feast of the Holy Innocents

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

L-Evanġelju li għadna kemm smajna minn San Mattew, proprjament jagħtina żewġ informazzjonijiet importanti. L-ewwel waħda hi, li biex jipproteġi lit-tifel, Ġużeppi mnebbaħ mill-Mulej permezz ta’ ħolma, jiddeċiedi li jitlaq minn pajjiżu u jmur l-Eġittu. Il-Familja Mqaddsa ssir familja refuġjata; taħrab mill-periklu u ssib kenn f’post ieħor. Meta nitkellmu dwar dawk li jkollhom jaħarbu minn sitwazzjonijiet iebsa, fil-ġurnata tal-lum, tajjeb niftakru li l-Familja Mqaddsa, li tant ngħożżu u li għandna tant devozzjoni lejn il-Bambin, lejn Ġesù, lejn San Ġużepp, lejn il-Madonna; nagħmlu tant purċissjonijiet, tant festi għal dawn il-qaddisin għeżież, għall-Familja Mqaddsa; kultant ninsew li dawn għamlu snin refuġjati fl-Eġittu, maħruba mill-qilla ta’ Erodi… Read more »

Pope at Angelus: harmony in the family is maintained by fighting selfishness

  The Vatican

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno!

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth. God chose a humble and simple family through which to come into our midst. Let us contemplate in amazement the beauty of this mystery, emphasizing two concrete aspects for our families.

The first: the family is the story from which we originateRead more »

Four seeds we should sow in our families – Bishop Galea-Curmi

Mass on the feast of the Holy Family

The Parish Church of the Annunciation, Ħal Balzan

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

F’liema żmien fl-istorja tal-umanità l-ħajja tal-familja kienet faċli? Naħseb li jekk immorru lura fl-istorja, nindunaw li qatt ma kienet faċli l-ħajja tal-familja. Anke meta llum niċċelebraw il-Familja Mqaddsa ta’ Ġesù, Marija u Ġużeppi, nindunaw li l-ħajja tal-familja tagħhom ma kinitx faċli.

Familja li tgħallimna

Il-qari mill-Kelma ta’ Alla llum jagħtina idea ta’ dan, meta Ġesù baqa’ t-Tempju, u Marija u Ġużeppi marru jfittxuh… Read more »

Saint John, apostle and evangelist – Feast
Readings of the day

First Reading: 1 Jn 1: 1-4
Psalm: 96: 1-2.5-6.11-12

Gospel: Jn 20: 2-8

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.

So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb… Read more »
