Pope at Audience: The merit of faith is receiving Jesus

  The Vatican

Brothers and sisters, good morning!

Saint Paul, who loved Jesus and had clearly understood what salvation was, has taught us that the “children of the promise” (Gal 4: 28) – that is all of us, justified by Jesus Christ – are no longer bound by the Law, but are called to the demanding life-style of the freedom of the Gospel… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 19th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Judges 11, 29-39a
Psalm: 39 (40), 5.7-8a.8b-9.10

Gospel: Mt 22, 1-14

In those days, Jesus again spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come.

Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 18th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Judges 9, 6-15
Psalm: 20 (21), 2-3.4-5.6-7

Gospel: Mt 20, 1-16a

In those days, Jesus told his disciples this parable: “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.’

When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.

Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’

But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? … Read more »

So that we are not saddened – Bishop Galea-Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Telaq b’qalbu sewda”. Hekk naqraw fl-Evanġelju tal-lum fuq dan iż-żagħżugħ li resaq lejn Ġesù biex jistaqsih x’għandu jagħmel, it-tajjeb li għadu jagħmel, biex jikseb il-ħajja ta’ dejjem. Nafu li Ġesù semmielu l-kmandamenti, u ż-żagħżugħ qallu “dan kollu ħaristu”. Imbagħad għamillu stedina. Qallu: “mur bigħ il-ġid li għandek, agħtih lill-foqra… imbagħad ejja u imxi warajja.” Imma ż-żagħżugħ “telaq b’qalbu sewda għax kien għani ħafna”… Read more »

The real treasure is having peace of heart – The Archbishop

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Il-mentalità prevalenti fi żmien Ġesù, imma forsi mhux inqas fi żmienna; li jekk inti għani, għandek ħafna flus, allura inti mbierek, jew inkella bniedem ta’ suċċess, għax il-kwalità tal-ħajja tiddependi mill-flus. Ġesù qed jgħallimna li dan kollu hu bluha. Li jekk it-teżor veru tal-bniedem hu l-paċi tal-qalb u Saltna tas-Smewwiet, mhix kwistjoni ta’ għana; imma kwistjoni ta’ qalbek fejn qiegħda… Read more »
