Pope at Audience: Jesus the model of prayer for his disciples

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!

The Gospels show us how prayer was fundamental in the relationship between Jesus and His disciples. This already appears in the choice of who would then become the Apostles. Luke places their election in a precise context of prayer, and he says: “In these days He went out to the mountain to pray; and all night He continued in prayer to GodRead more »

The Gospel of the day: 3rd June

Readings of the day

First Reading: Tob 6, 10-11; 7, 1.9-17; 8, 4-9a
Psalm: 127 (128), 1-2.3.4-5

Gospel: Mk 12, 28b-34

In those days one of the scribes came near Jesus and asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that “he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and “to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and “to love one’s neighbour as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Pope’s June prayer intention: The beauty of marriage’

“Is it true, what some people say—that young people don’t want to get married, especially during these difficult times?”

Pope Francis opens a video accompanying his prayer intention for the month of June with that question.

He goes on to admit that marriage is a “demanding journey” which can be complicated at times. But he adds that “getting married and sharing one’s life is something beautiful.”

“And on this life-long journey, the husband and wife aren’t alone,” says the Pope… Read more »

In those days, some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no children; and the second married the widow and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; none of the seven left children… Read more »

Pope reforms penal sanctions in the Church: Mercy requires correction

With the Apostolic Constitution “Pascite Gregem Dei,” Pope Francis reforms Book VI of the Code of Canon Law, continuing a revision begun by Benedict XVI and applying penal sanctions to more criminal offenses. The new text is a more agile tool for correction, which is to be applied promptly to “avoid more serious evils and to soothe the wounds caused by human weakness.”

“Tend the flock of God, guarding it not by constraint but willingly, as it pleases God” (cf… Read more »

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Ġesù jfittex ix-xbieha tal-imperatur Ċesari. Isibha fuq dinar; dinar kienet il-munita li biha jitħallas ħaddiem għal ġurnata xogħol. Hu jsib li fuq din il-munita hemm wiċċ Ċesari. Mela la l-munita għandha x-xbieha ta’ Ċesari, “Agħtu lil Ċesari dak li hu ta’ Ċesari” (Mk 12:17). Imma jekk jiena nfittex ix-xbieha ta’ Alla fejn insibha?
