Hearing the cry of the earth: We are all responsible

  • Francis has spoken. He has spoken loudly. The Pope’s encyclical had long been in the pipeline, perhaps even as long as nearly two years. Although the environment has often been part of the social teaching of successive Popes, particularly in the last fifty years, Laudato si’ is the first major document which is dedicated solely to this issue. Its subtitle already speaks volumes: On care for our common home

Pope visits sick and disabled, decries culture of waste

  • In the afternoon on Sunday, during his Apostolic Visit to Turin, Pope Francis visited the sick and disabled at the Little House of Divine Providence – known as the “Cottolengo” from its founder, Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo, a canon of the Corpus Domini Church of Turin. The Holy Father once again decried what he has described as a “culture of waste.” Among the many victims of this culture, the Holy Father spoke especially about the elderly “who are the memory and the wisdom of the people…

The Gospel of the day: 22nd June

  • Saint Matthew 7:1-5

Jesus said to his disciples: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”

The Gospel of the day: 21st June

  • Saint Mark 4:35-41

On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.” Leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion…
