The Church Secretariat for Social and Charitable Action is organizing a Week of Sacrifice between Friday 30th March, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and 6th April, Good Friday. The theme for this year is The Joy of Giving. The Secretariat has selected this theme to signify that when one gives from the heart, it brings happiness. On the contrary, self-centeredness causes one to suppress the good in oneself and life loses its meaning.
During the Week of Sacrifice, there will be offertory boxes and baskets in all Churches. As in past year, all generous offerings will enable the Church Secretariat for Social and Charitable Action to continue with its task of offering concrete assistance to many individuals and families within the parish. The Association has also trained individuals and enhanced its set-up in order to provide a wider service to those who require any form of assistance.
Over the years, the Church Secretariat for Social and Charitable Action has expanded its services and today, besides offering material need to families, it also provides the services of a social worker in order to encourage the family members to develop their potential to the full; this encourages their independence to the extent that they no longer remain dependent upon others; this enhances their self-esteem.
Other services include mini bus outings for the elderly and disabled which are possible through the use of a tail lift and three mini buses which the SAS owns, thanks to the generosity of the Maltese public.
