Archbishop Charles Scicluna, accompanied by 185 participants, departed Malta today to lead the annual four-day pilgrimage to Lourdes for Maltese patients, organised by the Maltese Association for the Transport of the Sick to Lourdes (UMTAL).

Joining the Archbishop is Fr Joe Mizzi, UMTAL’s spiritual director, along with two other priests who will provide spiritual guidance to the patients and pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage.

A dedicated medical team comprising eight doctors, eight nurses, four pharmacists, and a radiographer will ensure that the 50 Maltese patients receive continuous and attentive care during the trip.

This year’s group also includes 70 volunteers: 31 participating for the first time, 13 returning for their second experience, and 26 seasoned volunteers who have supported the pilgrimage over the years.

Together, patients, volunteers and pilgrims will share a deeply moving experience of faith and compassion in Lourdes. They will participate in various religious activities, including the International Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and the evening torchlight procession known as Aux Flambeaux. Archbishop Scicluna will also celebrate Mass in Maltese at the Grotto of Our Lady and lead the Via Crucis.

Since 1930, UMTAL has made this pilgrimage possible for individuals who, due to health challenges, might otherwise be unable to visit this sacred sanctuary. Those interested in joining next year’s pilgrimage can find more information at umtalmalta.org.
