On the date of the 90th anniversary of the setting up of the Catholic Action in Malta, which was celebrated on the 19th of February, an activity was organised for students and staff at the University of Malta. This activity aimed to encourage people to spread hope, no matter their status or role. The activity started with mass celebrated by Fr Keith Bonnici and Fr Bernard Micallef.
During mass, Fr Keith mentioned how more than 90 years ago, the first seeds of the Catholic Action were planted in Malta by University students of that time under the direction of Fr Daniel Callus. In 1930 Archbishop Mauro Caruana approved the first statute of the organisation. Slowly, numerous Catholic Action youth groups started popping up in different parishes around the Maltese islands. The seeds that were planted in the 1920s have continued to grow and flourish for these past 90 years.
After mass, the Catholic Action planted an olive tree on University to commemorate the anniversary and to encourage young people to spread hope. In fact each person present at the activity was given a pencil which can be planted after its use and will grow into herbs or flowers. During the week, a large board was also set up where students could write comments on what helps them and what hinders them during their student life.
This activity was organised as part of the #90YearsofService project finsnced by SIS (Small Initiatives Support Scheme), managed by the Malta Council for Voluntary Sector.
