The Secretariat for Social Communications organized a seminar intended for all those persons who are in some way involved in the production and/or presentation of religious and socio-religious programmes. The participants included members from the production teams of CAM Productions International, the TV Unit of the Media Centre and members of the Marana Tha’ community who produce and present the programme 4 given which is aired on NET TV during the summer months.

The CAM production house is responsible for the following programmes: Għażliet (Edu 22), Uċuħ (Net TV), Sejjaħtli (Favourite) and Bil-Kelma t-Tajba (One) whereas the TV Unit of the Media Centre produces Qalbinnies (TVM) and Kelma għall-Ħajja (TVM); it is also responsible for the airing of the Sunday Mass on TVM.

In his introduction, the Archbishop’s Delegate for Social Communications, Fr Charles Tabone O.P. made reference to the pluralism and competitiveness that exists in the field of production. He emphasized that these production houses are not intended to serve as an extension of all that is happening within the Church, but rather they are to reach out to the secular world in a creative manner in order to reach all those who are on the peripheries and who might be interested in forming part of the Christian community.

During the seminar Professor Albert Caruana from the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences of the University of Malta and Mr Matthew Pullicino, Director of the production house: The Bigger Picture – Malta, addressed those present. Professor Caruana spoke about the importance of ‘branding’ the message – a question which must be addressed if one is to reach out to today’s society in all its diversity. This encompasses both the imagery and the language which is used. Mr Pullicino for his part, spoke about the technicalities of production and made an evaluation of the religious and socio-religious programmes which are presently aired on television.
