On Saturday 17th April, 2010, at 5.00pm, Pope Benedict XVI arrived at the Malta International Airport. Maltese President, Dr. George Abela, opened the ceremony with a welcoming speech and was, afterwards, followed by the Pope who also addressed those present.

Thousands of Children swamped Saint George’s square in order to sing Happy Birthday to the Pope. The Pope and the President exchanged gifts and the Pope was taken to Saint Paul’s Grotto in Rabat. Pope Benedict expressed his delight in seeing that despite 1950 years had passed since Saint Paul’s shipwreck, yet the Maltese have held on tightly to their belief.
