“Peace be with you” — these were the first words with which Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square, and indeed the entire world, as he appeared for the first time on the central balcony of the Apostolic Palace.

In a calm yet resolute voice, the Successor of Peter invited each and every one of us “to be a synodal church, walking and always seeking peace, charity, closeness, especially to those who are suffering.” These words offer a clear indication that his pontificate will be marked by openness, compassion, and fidelity to the Gospel.

Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., now Pope Leo XIV, brings with him a rich pastoral and missionary background, profoundly shaped by years of service in the Americas and within the universal Church. His choice of name — recalling Saint Leo the Great — is rich in meaning. It signals a papacy grounded in truth, courageous in dialogue and firm in defending human dignity.

In a world scarred by war, secularisation and a deep yearning for spiritual direction, the Church now looks to her new shepherd with hope and prayerful expectation. Pope Leo XIV is not only the Bishop of Rome, but a spiritual father to more than a billion Catholics around the globe. His voice, his gestures and his example will help guide how the Church listens, speaks and journeys alongside all people of goodwill.

As we give thanks for the election of His Holiness, we are reminded that the path forward is one of unity and faithful witness. The Church is called to walk with Pope Leo XIV, rooted in the Gospel and trusting that the Lord who has called him will sustain him.

May the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV be a time of renewal, peace and bold witness.

Peace be with you, Pope Leo XIV!
