A series of masterclasses exploring a wide range of practical and musicological topics is being presented by The Academy of Sacred Music Francesco Azopardi, in collaboration with the Pastoral Formation Institute. These masterclasses provide an opportunity for musicians, scholars, conductors and choir members to deepen their knowledge and refine their skills in sacred music.

The sessions will be led in English and supported by the Directorate of Culture’s Artist Residency Programme. The sessions will cover the following key topics: Introduction to Gregorian Chant, Conducting for Maestri di Cappella, Introduction to Sacred Polyphony, Choral Singing Techniques for Adult Voices, and The Art of Interpreting Gregorian Chant.

The experts who will be giving these masterclasses are renowned professors and practitioners from prestigious international institutions, including the Cappella Musicale del Duomo di Milano, the AERCO Academy of Bologna, and the University of Almeria (Spain).

Masterclasses will take place once a month from May to November 2025.

About The Academy of Sacred Music Francesco Azopardi

The Academy of Sacred Music Francesco Azopardi of the Archdiocese of Malta is offering a variety of courses designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals involved in music ministry within the Church.

The Academy is named after Maltese composer and pedagogue Francesco Azopardi (1748-1809), who was among the first to place Malta on the international music map.

The Academy collaborates with renowned international institutions in the field of sacred choral music, such as the Cappella Musicale del Duomo di Milano – Europe’s oldest cathedral choir – and Accademia AERCO (Associazione Emiliano-Romagnola Cori) which encompasses 246 associated choirs from all over the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy.
