Archbishop Charles Scicluna has appointed Deacon Jesmond Schembri as the new Director of the Migrants Commission, succeeding Fr Anton D’Amato, who served in this role for nearly five years.

For the past 75 years, the Migrants Commission has been dedicated to supporting Maltese emigrants and their families and immigrants who have arrived in Malta seeking refuge or employment. Among its key initiatives, the Commission assists migrants to help them live with dignity and facilitates their integration into Maltese society.

Jesmond Schembri holds a degree in Social Work from the Universities of Malta and Hull in the United Kingdom, and pursued Theology studies at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Theology.

He was ordained a deacon of the Greek Catholic Church in May 2023 and is married. With extensive experience in social work, particularly in the field of addictions, he has also contributed to the development of social policy and worked in data protection. He joined the Migrants Commission in October 2023.
