Archbishop Charles Scicluna has announced the list of sacred churches in Malta linked to the granting of the plenary indulgence during this Jubilee Year dedicated to the virtue of hope.

In the words of Pope Francis, plenary indulgence offer the faithful the opportunity to rediscover “the unlimited nature of God’s mercy.” Also through visits to these sacred places, “we allow the Lord to erase our sins, to heal our hearts, to raise us up, to embrace us and to reveal to us his tender and compassionate (Spes Non Confundit, 23).

In the Archdiocese of Malta, the faithful—described by Pope Francis as ‘pilgrims of hope’—may obtain the Jubilee Indulgence by devoutly visiting the following consecrated churches:

  • St Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina
  • St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta
  • Sanctuary of Our Lady, Mellieħa
  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, Ħaż-Żabbar
  • Chapel of Mater Dei Hospital
  • Chapel of Corradino Correctional Facility
  • Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St Vincent de Paul – Ħal Luqa
  • All parish churches in Valletta
  • Church of St Francis of Assisi (Putirjal), Valletta
  • Church of St Mary of Jesus (Ta’ Ġieżu), Valletta
  • Church of the Holy Cross (Tal-Kapuċċini), Floriana
  • Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Valletta
  • Minor Basilica of the Nativity of Mary, Senglea
  • Minor Basilica of St Helen, Birkirkara
  • Minor Basilica of the Assumption, Mosta
  • Minor Basilica of St Paul, Rabat
  • Minor Basilica of Christ the King, Paola
  • Collegiate Church of St Lawrence, Vittoriosa
  • Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception, Cospicua
  • Collegiate Church of the Nativity of Mary, Naxxar
  • Collegiate Church of St George, Ħal Qormi

Pilgrims visiting these sacred places are encouraged to participate in Eucharistic Adoration, recite the Our Father, the Profession of Faith, and Marian invocations such as the Salve Regina. Within the same week of their visit, they partake in the sacraments of reconciliation and holy communion, thereby freeing themselves from all temporal punishment for their sins.

or individuals unable to partake in solemn celebrations, pilgrimages or devotional visits due to serious reasons—such as cloistered religious, the elderly, the sick or prisoners—the Jubilee Indulgence remains accessible. This ay be obtained by spiritually uniting with the Pope’s or the diocesan Bishop’s liturgical celebrations broadcast through media, reciting the Our Father, the Creed, and the Salve Regina, offering their sufferings as a heartfelt sacrifice to God.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna emphasised that the extensive list of churches reflects a commitment to fulfilling Pope Francis’s vision of the Jubilee Year as a “great feast of mercy.” It is an invitation for all to experience the sacraments and receive God’s forgiveness, ensuring that no one is excluded from the healing grace of this Holy Year.
