Concerning the resolution on women’s rights and gender equality passed by the EU Parliament, the Maltese representative Simon Busuttil extends his analysis from the political-institutional field to the socio-cultural field: “Politicians represent civil society”, he declares to the SIR. “For this reason, I am even more concerned. Everyone speaks about values, but then, when it comes to defending them…”. Busuttil observes: “Although it has no legal value, the adopted resolution violates the subsidiarity principle and, where it speaks about abortion, it menaces the right to life of the unborn. A cultural battle should be fought, besides the battle we are called to fight in the institutions”. “On this issue, the People’s Party has given specific directions, although we also have to acknowledge, with regret, many failures”, he adds. “It is therefore important to multiply the occasions for debate and dialogue, even with other political groups, in order to find common positions on these crucial issues”.
