Pope holds press conference on flight back from Korea

From the possibility of the unification of the Koreas to the idea of “just war”, from the situation of persecuted minorities in Iraq to the Pope’s upcoming journey to Albania: on the flight back from Korea to Rome, Pope Francis answered questions put to him by journalists travelling with him aboard the papal plane.

In what has become a traditional impromptu press conference aboard the papal plane, journalists spent more than an hour questioning the Pope about his recent visit to Korea for the 6th Asian Youth Day, about issues raised during the journey, his take on the ongoing violence against Christians and other minorities in Iraq, and about plans for future foreign trips…

Pope Francis has just left Seoul on a Korean Airlines flight headed for Rome at the conclusion of his five day visit to the Asian country. The plane is due to land at Ciampino airport just before 6pm, local time, on Monday evening. The Pope’s departure from the Korean capital came after a concluding Mass in Seoul’s Catholic cathedral, during which he challenged Christians to work and pray for peace and reconciliation on the divided peninsula…

The Council of European Bishops’ Conferences has sent a letter signed by the Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences from the entire continent members of CCEE to the United Nations Security Council.

In it the bishops call on the international community to take urgent “decisions to put an end to the atrocious actions against Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq”…

Pope Francis has sent a video message to the people of Korea, broadcast on Korean television over the weekend and ahead of his Apostolic journey to Korea.

In the message, the Holy Father begins by inviting the Korean people to pray with him that his upcoming visit will bear fruit for the Church and for Korean society in general…

The Archdiocese of Malta wishes to invite Christians to attend an activity which will consist of prayer for peace in the world and for Christians who are being persecuted in various countries. Following an appeal for prayer, Archbishop Paul Cremona O.P. and Auxiliary Bishop Charles J. Scicluna have expressed their desire for Christians to unite in prayer with Pope Francis, who is continually appealing for peace in various countries which are facing wars and conflicts, and for those communities of Christians which are suffering from violence because of their faith…

Pope Francis renewed his call for prayer and concrete assistance for the suffering populations of Iraq this Sunday. Addressing the crowd gathered in St Peter’s Square for the traditional Angelusprayer, the Holy Father also offered prayerful appeals for an end to the fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza, and for the victims of the Ebola outbreak and for all those fighting to stop it…

We, the bishops of Malta and Gozo, are deeply saddened by the violence being spread in various countries where there are wars and persecution towards Christians, particularly in the north of Iraq. It is with a heavy heart that we are following the plight of our fellow Christians who are being driven out of their homes with nothing to take with them…
