Church property worth €8 million to become Malta’s first state-of-the-art Hospice palliative care complex

The Archdiocese of Malta and The Malta Hospice Movement signed an official agreement for the establishment of St Michael’s Hospice, the first state-of-the-art complex in Malta dedicated entirely to providing comprehensive palliative care.

During the Year of Mercy, in July 2016, Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna had announced that the Church would identify the ideal premises for the setting up of a complex that, in collaboration with a registered organisation in the field, would provide palliative care services for patients with serious medical conditions…

The Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE) and the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferencs of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) are to hold a new Seminar with bishops from the two continents in Fatima (Portugal), from 12-15 April 2018, on the theme The significance of globalisation for the Church and for cultures in Europe and Africa.

Following the desire to promote growing pastoral collaboration between the epsicopate of the two continents, for more than a decade the two continental bodies have been organising a series of symposia and seminars to strengthen communion and collaboration, and reflection on the great challenges facing the Church…

A study commissioned by the Archdiocese of Malta shows that 92% of Maltese are Catholic, of whom 74% claim to go to Mass at least once a month. The research also shows that 40% attend Mass every Sunday. This was confirmed by the census held between the 2nd and 3rd December of last year, that showed that Mass attendance was at 38%.

This research was carried out for the first time using different methods (a census as well as research) for the Church to have a wide and accurate picture of society in order to be more pastorally effective in the coming years…
