Reaction to the proposed shooting ranges complex at Busbesija in Mosta

  • The Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment (KA) is deeply concerned about the proposed complex of shooting ranges on around 70 tumoli of land which include agricultural land at Busbesija, Mosta. The area which is outside development zone (ODZ) is an area of high landscape value as designated in the Central Local Plan. The KA’s view is that the use of such land for the proposed project amounts to a substantial negative impact on the Maltese countryside…

All that Glitters is not Gold – Reaction to the Proposal for the Construction of a University in M’scala

  • The Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment (KA) has followed the developments in the case of the proposed building of a University at Zonqor Point, and is concerned on various points which are discussed below. The KA is absolutely not against any attempt at improving the education sector and at providing wider opportunities in the academic field.

Procedures for the granting of land in the framework of a land-use strategy

The Commission is surprised that while Government issues tenders for small parcels of land or buildings, in the case of the Zonqor Point project it has decided to choose an investor and grant 90 tumoli of land without any kind of competition…

Statement by the Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment: The Development of the South-East Coast of Malta

  • Considering the high population density of our islands, one rightly expects land space to be managed with great care to ensure that any development would sustain it for a good number of years. Therefore successful management in this regard implies that this is carried out in a strategic planning framework that integrates various needs, so that the common good is safeguarded. We have to ensure that past mistakes are avoided and that one particular project does not undermine the objectives of other projects…

Armier: Protect the rights of those who abide by the law

  • Il-Kummissjoni Interdjoċesana Ambjent (KA) hija mħassba serjament bl-aħbar li l-Enemalta se tinstalla smart meters fil-kmamar illegali fl-Armier. Fl-1 t’Awwissu 2008, il-KA flimkien mal-Kummissjoni Ġustizzja u Paċi, fi stqarrija għall-istampa, kienu tennew ċar u tond: “M’għandniex nagħmlu tagħna art li mhix tagħna, u lanqas ma nistgħu nokkupaw kmamar b’mod illegali.” L-istqarrija kienet ħarġet bħala parti minn kampanja biex tinħoloq kuxjenza pubblika fuq aspetti kurrenti marbuta ma’ valuri soċjali u Nsara…

SPED – A far cry from the 1990 Structure Plan

  • In its reactions to the Strategic Plan for Environment and Development (SPED) document, the Kummissjoni Interdjocesana Ambjent feels that the policy outlined in the document fails to be an adequate replacement for the 1990 Structure Plan mainly because, apart from its shorter time frame (its target is 2020), it fails to provide official statistical information justifying its policies and proposals. Moreover, notwithstanding the extension of the period of consultation, there has been no real attempt to motivate the general public to participate…

Reflection on the European Parliament elections

    • Il-Kummissjoni Interdjoċesana Ambjent, il-Caritas, il-Kummissjoni Emigranti, iċ-Ċentru Fidi u Ġustizzja, il-Kummissjoni Pastorali fid-Dinja tax-Xogħol u l-Kummissjoni Ġustizzja u Paċi, jixtiequ jwasslu din ir-riflessjoni wara r-riżultat tal-elezzjoni għall-Parlament Ewropew. Irridu, qabel kollox, infaħħru lil dawk kollha li marru jivvutaw. Dan hu sinjal ċar li l-maġġoranza kbira tal-poplu Malti tifhem u terfa’ din ir-responsabbiltà.
  • Fl-istess ħin, ir-riżultat f’Malta u f’xi pajjiżi oħra jinkwetana minħabba l-fatt li l-ideoloġiji tal-lemin estrem irnexxielhom jiġbru numru konsiderevoli ta’ voti u jeleġġu membri fil-Parlament Ewropew…

The reaction of the Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment to the Consultation Documents on Environment and Planning

Il-Kummissjoni Interdjoċesana Ambjent (KA) hija mħassba li ħafna mit-tibdil propost f’dawn id-dokumenti jidher li ma jagħtix raġuni xierqa li għaliha qed tkun proposta l-bidla. Dan meta wieħed jeżamina l-effett li t-tibdiliet proposti aktarx se jkollhom fuq l-ambjent, l-iżvilupp sostenibbli u, fl-aħħar mill-aħħar, fuq in-nies ta’ kull sitwazzjoni soċjo-ekonomika. Hija ssemmi seba’ punti li jqanqlu tħassib partikulari fosthom l-introduzzjoni mill-ġdid tal-outline development permits, u t-tneħħija tas-Sitt Skeda li turi bini li ma jistax jiġi sanzjonat… Read more »

The reaction of the Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment to the Proposal Document on Fireworks Factory Complexes

  • Il-Kummissjoni Interdjoċesana Ambjent tinnota b’sodisfazzjon il-prijorità li d-dokument Fireworks Factory Complexes maħruġ mill-MEPA jagħti lis-saħħa u s-sigurtà ta’ kull min jista’ jkun involut kemm direttament kif ukoll indirettament f’dan il-kamp. Hija ssostni li għandu jiġi stabbilit in-numru ta’ kmamar tan-nar ġodda li jiflaħ pajjiżna, u jiġi aċċertat li s-siti li fihom jinbnew ma jsirx żvilupp ieħor fihom…

The reaction of the Interdiocesan Commission for the Environment to the Consultation Document on Waste Management

  • The Kummissjoni Interdjoċesana Ambjent (KA) is concerned that irrespective of the islands’ high population density, limited land space and lack of economies of scale coupled with the effects of its climatic conditions, the Maltese tend to opt for short-term goals with promises of great national economic gains fed into their psyche by short-sighted economists and developers. The KA considers the Consultation Document: Waste Management Plan for the Maltese Islands: a resource management approach 2013-2020, as a step forward towards putting an end to this trend that has invariably resulted in gain for a handful of entrepreneurs and irreparable loss for our nation…
