• Appeal for prayers and donations for Egypt and Syria

Message from the Bishops of Malta and Gozo

  • In view of the massacres which are taking place in our two neighbouring countries, Syria and Egypt, we, the Bishops of Malta and Gozo wish to appeal to the people of God in our country to offer heartfelt prayers in order that the fighting, which is a cause of much unjust suffering and unnecessary deaths, may cease.

As we pray for our Christian brothers who live in these countries, so that their right to religious liberty may be respected, we also call for the peace of God to be bestowed upon our Muslim brothers.  As stated by his Holiness Pope Francis, in a message which he sent recently to all the Muslims in the world, it is hoped that mutual respect and friendship will be fostered between Christians and Muslims.

We wish to take this opportunity to express our solidarity with the Egyptians and Syrians who reside in our country, and empathize with them them in their concern and sorrow over the events which are occuring in their countries.

War bears heavily upon men and for this reason we appeal for help in order to appease the burden which is being laid upon our brethren.  In the forthcoming days, a donation drive will be organized.  The proceeds will be shared equally between the Churches of Egypt and Syria, irrespective of their religion, so that the funds may serve to alleviate the poverty inflicted by the war.
