The Faculty of Theology is the oldest faculty at the University of Malta. Theology and Philosophy were among the subjects taught at the Collegium Melitense, founded by the Jesuits in Valletta on 12 November 1592. The Collegium was empowered by the Pope to confer academic degrees. In 1768, following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Malta by Grand Master Pinto de Fonseca, the Collegium became a university with the authorisation of the Holy See. The Faculty of Theology was suppressed in 1978 but was immediately re-established by the Holy See at the Archbishop’s Seminary in Tal-Virtù, Rabat. Ten years later, following an agreement between the Holy See and the Republic of Malta, the Faculty was reincorporated into the University of Malta.
The Faculty of Theology currently serves hundreds of students, including those reading for canonical degrees and students from other Faculties who take courses offered by the Faculty. Its programmes of study span a wide range of areas, including Theology, Religious Studies, Scripture Studies, Bioethics, Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Pastoral Psychology, Safeguarding, Catholic School Leadership, Ecclesiastical Patrimony, Spirituality, Spiritual Companionship, Matrimonial Canon Law, and Youth Ministry.

The Faculty’s academic journal is Melita Theologica, which has been published since 1947.
