At the beginning of this year, the Mdina Metropolitan Chapter launched a program to modernise the Cathedral, the Museum and the Archives. This program is intended not only to preserve the rich heritage one could find in these three entities, but also to make these entities more accessible for the general public. The project further enhances the Maltese touristic product by offering a better experience of these three unique places.
The first phase of this multimedia interactive project comprises three websites designed for the three entities.
By making use of the latest technology of virtual tours, drone photography, documentaries and video trailers, the idea behind these websites is to create interest and instil that curiosity which pushes the public to personally visit and experience the unique artefacts of these places. The website is intended to attract not only the local public but also the foreigner to visit the Cathedral and the Museum in particular, and to see the works of the famous Mattia Preti, Francesco Zahra, Favrei, unique collections such as that of Albrecht Durer and the coin collection, a set of 25 silver statues, the Polypthic showing episodes from the life of St Paul, amongst others.
Both the Museum and the Archives shall be celebrating the 50th anniversary and the website would be an additional tool for the public to get to know what is happening. The Archives shall have a complete database and further on the documents shall also be catalogued. This shall be directly available through the website. The website, which took couple of months to build, was designed by Cyberspace Solutions.
With an investment of over €30,000, this is just the first phase of the whole ambitious project, which is designed to improve the experience of the visitors and make the Archives more accessible to the researcher in general.
In the coming future, the Chapter shall be investing in audio guides and other interactive equipment that would furnish the public, the students, the researcher and the visitor with information, facts, pictures, video clips and documentation regarding the historical heritage of the Cathedral, the Museum and the Archives.
