Archbishop Charles Scicluna described Id-Dar tal-Providenza as a “monument to human dignity and to the solidarity of the Maltese,” as he visited the RTK103 studios ahead of its 60-hour marathon in aid of a charity that is marking its 60th anniversary this year.

The charity was kickstarted in late 1965 when Dun Mikiel Azzopardi’s wish for a residential facility providing dignified care for people with disabilities – expressed on his popular Rediffusion programme – encouraged a woman to donate Lm100 she had saved up for a vacation.

The first residential facility opened in the outskirts of Siġġiewi soon after, and Dar tal-Providenza now runs 7 homes – three in the Siġġiewi complex, and four smaller facilities in Birkirkara, Qawra, Siġġiewi and Żurrieq.

Speaking to RTK103, Archbishop Scicluna stressed that the name of the charity was apt, given that it relied on providence: “the great heart of the Maltese people, who understand that some of us may need special care and that we should guarantee that they receive the care they have a right to.”

The archbishop thus appealed for the public to be generous, “so that we may give a push that we can keep building on at the start of the year;” Dar tal-Providenza holds an annual fundraiser on New Year’s Day.
