Archbishop Charles Scicluna has encouraged journalists within Newsbook Malta to remain committed to a mission that serves humanity, stating that our newsroom “is not for sale” and should never compromise its values. He delivered this message during the blessing and official opening of our newly established newsroom.
Commitment to respectful reporting and responsible content
During the inauguration, Archbishop Scicluna underlined the responsibility journalists carry towards the Maltese and Gozitan public.
He reminded us that our platforms have clear ethical limits and that we must safeguard against material that spreads hatred or undermines what is healthy and constructive. Our work, he said, must strive to “bring light, not darkness”.
Focus on dignity, compassion, and careful verification
The Archbishop also highlighted the Church’s support for our work while emphasising the dignity of journalism as a vocation. He called for storytelling that upholds compassion and respects the human dignity at the heart of every narrative.
Archbishop Scicluna urged our newsroom staff to remain fully present and discerning, ensuring that the constant flow of information is carefully verified before publication so it cannot become a vehicle for deception.
These comments came shortly after his participation in the RTK103 special programme Għal Kulħadd, during which he expressed appreciation for the challenging, yet invaluable work carried out by our journalists.
Beacon Media Group Chairman Franco Curmi – addressing employees from across the group, which includes RTK103 and Newsbook Malta – noted the significant spread of misinformation in today’s digital landscape. He stressed that journalists have a duty to ensure that published content is accurate and error-free.
Curmi added that the newly inaugurated newsroom should serve as a professional, efficient, and dignified workspace dedicated to our listeners, readers, and followers.
