A group of 14 altar boys from Malta and Gozo are currently offering their services in the Vatican and were lucky enough to meet Pope Francis on Sunday.
The altar boys took a photo with Pope Francis who met them after Sunday’s Angelus prayer, where they prayed together before the Pontiff gave them his blessing and asked them to pray for him.
The altar boys are accompanied by Msgr. Frans Bonnici and the Gozitan seminarian, John Xerri. They left Malta on 26 July and will return to Malta on 5 August.
The Gozitan altar boys also met with the former Gozo bishop and now Cardinal Mario Grech.
On Saturday morning, the altar boys held a symbolic ceremony of the red vestment, which was led by Mons. Maximillian Grech, a Gozitan priest who works in Diplomacy and who is serving in the Secretariat of State at the Vatican.
Later, Cardinal Grech delivered a short message where he spoke about the importance of listening amid the many distractions that children and young people face. Afterwards, the altar boys took their vows, and after the sash was blessed, it was given to them so that they formally became altar boys of the Basilica of Saint Peter.
On Sunday morning the altar boys met the Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Peter the Cardinal Mauro Gambetti OFMCONV.
