A just and compassionate response to homelessness in Malta

Photo by Taufiq Klinkenborg on pexels.com

The Justice and Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of Malta expresses deep concern at the recent prosecution of 12 homeless individuals, charged with loitering and begging, simply for not having a fixed address.

This distressing episode has laid bare the alarming reality that our system too often punishes those in need instead of offering a helping hand. As Archbishop Charles Scicluna recently said, housing is not merely a commodity but a fundamental human right… Read more »

Gospel: John 21:15-19

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” (Jesus) said to him, “Feed my sheep… Read more »

Pope at Audience: Looking for meaning in life? Turn to God

  Saint Peter's Square, Vatican City

Dear brothers and sisters,

I would like to look at one of Jesus’ parables again. Also in this case, it is a story that fosters our hope. Indeed, at times we have the impression that we cannot find meaning for our lives: we feel useless, inadequate, just like the labourers who wait in the marketplace, waiting for someone to hire them to work… Read more »

Statement by Archbishop Emeritus George Frendo

I wish to clarify media reports regarding comments I made during a television programme about a recent case of clerical sexual abuse.

While I urged victims to find it within their hearts to forgive the perpetrators of such despicable acts – which is in line with the teachings of the Gospel – I did not in any way seek to convey the impression given by headlines in the media that this should be an alternative to reporting the matter to the relevant authorities… Read more »

Priests reflect on the challenges and opportunities of vocations in today’s society

Matul il‑laqgħat ta’ aġġornament għall‑kleru ta’ din is‑sena, is‑saċerdoti djoċesani u reliġjużi ġew imħeġġa jiddiskutu l‑isfidi u l‑opportunitajiet relatati mal‑vokazzjonijiet. Ispirati mill‑episodju tal‑Vanġelu tad‑dixxipli fit‑triq lejn Għemmaws, il‑laqgħat kienu mqassma fuq tliet temi prinċipali: li niltaqgħu, nisimgħu u nirrispondu.

Biex jiffaċilitaw dan il‑proċess ta’ riflessjoni u djalogu, ġew mistiedna is‑Sur Lawrence Zammit mill‑kumpanija MISCO u Patri Frankie Cini MSSP li ppreżentaw ir‑realtà tal‑vokazzjonijiet f’Malta u għenu lis‑saċerdoti jirriflettu fuq kif is‑soċjetà Maltija tħares lejn is‑saċerdot… Read more »

We’re not alone – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

The Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at the Archbishop's Curia, Floriana

L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

“Lili tħalluni waħdi” (Ġw 16:32). Dan hu l-kliem li jgħid Ġesù lid-dixxipli tiegħu – qegħdin hawnhekk fl-Aħħar Ċena, ftit qabel ma jgħaddi għall-passjoni u l-mewt tiegħu. Hawn mal-ewwel jolqotna kif dan il-kliem li jgħid Ġesù, li hu kliem ħiereġ mill-imħabba tiegħu lejn id-dixxipli, mhuwiex kliem li jikkundanna. Meta qed jgħid “lili tħalluni waħdi”, qed jgħid verità, qed jgħid x’se jiġri. Imma ma jgħidux b’ton ta’ kundanna, anzi jgħidu b’ton li jrid jiġbed l-attenzjoni tagħhom, tad-dixxipli, li hawn qalulu li issa qed jifhmuh u jemmnu, li, fil-fatt, ftit wara dad-diskors se jħalluh waħdu… Read more »
