Pope Leo XIV dines with 100 homeless at Castel Gandolfo

Photo: Vatican News

Over 100 homeless and vulnerable people supported by Caritas of Albano joined Pope Leo XIV for a meal in the gardens of Castel Gandolfo, where the Pontiff is spending much of his summer break.

The initiative continues the practice established by Pope Francis, who frequently invited disadvantaged groups to share meals with him. Many of the attendees at Castel Gandolfo face homelessness or other personal difficulties, and the gathering was coordinated by the Diocese of Albano Laziale together with the Borgo Laudato Si’ centre… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 19th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Judges 6:11-24a
Psalm: 84 (85):9,11-12,13-14

Gospel: Matthew 19:23-30

In those days, Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”

Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you… Read more »

A fire we want to ignite – Bishop Galea‑Curmi

Mass for families on the feast days

The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, Mġarr

Ritratt: Bjorn Briffa L-omelija tal-Isqof Joseph Galea-Curmi

Fost il-kliem ta’ Ġesù li l-aktar jaħsadna, u li jinstema’ jistona, huwa dan li smajna fl-Evanġelju llum, meta Ġesù jgħid: “Taħsbu intom li jien ġejt inġib il-paċi fid-dinja? Le, ngħidilkom, imma l-firda” (Lq 12:51). Jgħaddilna minn moħħna: dan hu l-istess Ġesù li dejjem nafuh bħala dak li jġib il-paċi? Li mill-ewwel mument, meta l-anġli dehru lir-rgħajja biex iħabbrulhom li twieled Ġesù, kienu qalu: “paċi fl-art lill-bnedmin li jogħġbu lilu” (Lq 2:14)? … Read more »

Pope offers prayers for flood victims in Pakistan, Nepal and India

  Castel Gandolfo, Italy

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday!

Today’s Gospel presents us with a demanding text (cf. Lk 12:49-53), in which Jesus uses strong images and great frankness to teach his disciples that his mission, and even that of his followers, is not a “bed of roses”, but a “sign of contradiction” (cf. Lk 2:34).

In this way, the Lord anticipates what he will have to face in Jerusalem when he will be opposed, arrested, insulted, beaten, crucified; when his message of love and justice will be rejected; when the leaders of the people will react with viciousness at his preaching… Read more »

Welcome Christ in the poor – The Pope

Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rotonda in Albano, Italy

Having returned to Castel Gandolfo in the Castelli Romani on 13 August, Pope Leo XIV presided over Mass at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rotonda. Reflecting on the gift of celebrating another day together, the Pope turned to the “greater gift” that Christ has already overcome: death. He explained that Sunday is a reminder of this victory.

He acknowledged that while we might come to church with fear and anxiety, “immediately we are less alone” once we gather together and encounter the Word and Body of Christ… Read more »

The Gospel of the day: 18th August

Readings of the day

First Reading: Judges 2:11-19
Psalm: 105 (106):34-35,36-37,39-40,43ab & 44

Gospel: Matthew 19:16-22

In those days, someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?”

And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.  Read more »

The courage of faith: when we feel the weight of good and evil – The Archbishop

Mass on the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Church of St Paul’s Shipwreck, St Paul's Bay

L-omelija tal-Arċisqof Charles Jude Scicluna

Ħa noħodkom ftit lura fiż-żmien, meta Ġesù kellu 40 jum u l-ġenituri tiegħu ħaduh fit-tempju, skont il-Liġi, “biex jippreżentawh lill-Mulej” (Lq 2:22). Dakinhar kien hemm Xmun fit-Tempju u malli ra lil din it-tarbija, qal: “għajnejja raw is-salvazzjoni” (Lq 2:30). Imma waqt li sejjaħ lil din it-tarbija “d-dawl tal-ġnus, il-glorja ta’ Iżrael” (ara Lq 2:32), ħares lejn ommu u qalilha: “sejf jinfidlek ruħek” (Lq 2:35)… Read more »
